The Inner City Mental Health Worker will help individuals with chronic and persistent mental illness navigate barriers and resources to meet their individual needs. They will be responsible for direct service delivery and case management, including referral, advocacy, support, and case plan development. The Mental Health Support Worker will provide the services in an outreach and in-reach capacity.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishing therapeutic relationships with individuals who live with mental health concerns in the inner city community, and working to ensure that their needs are met.
- Build rapport and trust with individuals while focusing on their quality of life to support in the co-creation of case plans and addressing identified goals and needs that relate to the stability of their mental health.
- Provide crisis intervention services as needed; including follow-up support until crisis situations stabilized.
- Provide short-term and long-term emotional support, information about available counselling resources and referrals to counselling services.
- Supporting access to information and education around mental health diagnosis.
- Organize and facilitate recreational activities for groups and individuals.
- Administration duties as required for funding reports, case notes, and our online database system (ETO).
- Assist with maintaining the cleanliness of Mental Wellness Space and around the building.
- Appropriate combination of work and educational background.
- A degree is desirable, from a related field (psychology, social work, addictions and mental health) but candidates without a degree who have post-secondary education and relevant and related experience will also be considered.
Skills, Abilities and Attitudes
- Keen understanding of the needs and challenges facing marginalized populations particularly Mental Health and Addiction issues.
- Experienced in helping community members address needs and connect them with appropriate resources.
- Proven ability to work in a respectful and client centered manner and able to communicate effectively.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Efforts to Outcomes or other data entry systems.
- Able to walk, stand, sit, drive, reach, lift, climb stairs, pushing, pulling, reaching, crouching and squatting may be required sometimes. Environment may include dust and noise.
- Comfortable representing the mental health team at stakeholder meetings in regards to inner-city mental health.
Experience and Knowledge
- At least 2 years’ experience working with individuals with mental health concerns (including mental illness and/or substance use).
- At least 2 years’ experience delivering community-based recreation and activity-oriented programs for people with mental health concerns or individuals who face multiple barriers.
- Knowledge of social, health and other related services.
- Experience working with Edmonton’s inner-city population is an asset.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends and services particularly within, but not limited to the urban Indigenous population is essential.
A criminal record and child and youth information services check will be required prior to the start of employment.
Boyle street staff are also required to have Standard First Aid training and de-escalation/non-violent crisis intervention training (it is an asset to have these prior, but they are also provided to staff upon hire).
